Meta Tags and Search engine optimization

Its has always been a debate as to how exactly do meta tags contribute to the search engine ranking. Do they contribute and if so then to what extent. Meta Tags do contribute but to say that they can get you to the top by themselves its a myth.

Popular Meta Tags:

• Title Tag
• Keywords Tag
• Description tag
• Robot Tag
• Author
• Document Expiry Tag

Of the above mentioned tags Title tag is the most important of all, as it marks the defination of the document. while the other tags like keywords have various formats and which is the best is debatable.

Keywords can be put seperated by commas, commas with and with out space and without space.
The best is comma without space.

Description is again an important tag but varies from search engines.

Robot Tag helps you tell the search engine which documents to index or not.

There is new tag called NOODP which help you tell the search engine like Google and MSN to not show the Dmoz description which is outdated in most cases.
